Maggie Keswick Jencks recognised the need for people affected by cancer to access information and gain vital emotional support free of charge. She envisaged all individuals receiving support at a centre located near to the hospital providing their treatment. Each person who visited the centre would be helped to find the best way of coping. There was to be no "right way".
Maggie's dream of such a place came true in 1996 when the first Maggie's Centre opened in Edinburgh. Since then a further five centres have opened in Scotland and three interim services operational in Scotland, England and Wales. Maggie's London opened in Spring 2008 and there are a further six purpose-built centres planned for completion for 2012.
Maggie's Cotswolds will be the seventh centre to open in the UK and we hope to welcome our first visitors by the Summer of 2010. A building close to Cheltenham's Oncology Centre has already been purchased and plans to convert and extend the building have been drawn up by Sir Richard MacCormac CBE. The centre will provide a number of support services ranging from benefits advice to nutritional advice, group and individual counselling, as well as relaxation therapies and expressive courses. It will be a plcae where the question, "will I live?", is turned into the will to live.
£3 million is needed to convert the "Pool Keeper's Lodge" into a fully functioning, up and running Maggie's Centre and we are asking the local community to help us raise £500,000.
